Oxford House provides supportive, affordable housing for individuals recovering from chemical dependency in Madison County. By promoting independence and personal responsibility, we hope to mitigate relapse in substance abusers. Each house is self-run by residents. The goal of Oxford House is to ensure every recovering individual in the Huntsville area has access to quality housing and a supportive environment including access to employment with dignity.
The Oxford Model operates on the concept of group accountability and is democratically run by residents. Each house is financially self-supported by residents paying their fair share rent. House meetings take place once every week with mandatory attendance by all residents. All household chores are communal, and decided on at weekly meetings. The weekly meeting is the place to resolve disputes among the “family” and a place to work together to keep recovery at the heart of all house operations.
Residents are expected to pay their weekly share of expenses on time including their rent. Failure to pay expenses each week is grounds for immediate dismissal as it jeopardizes the operation of the house. Part of the recovery process is consistently taking care of responsibilities both social and financial.
Oxford House is not a treatment center centers, a halfway house, nor a homeless shelter. There is no house manager, paid staff or other type of institutional personnel involved in the supervision or management of the house. The residents make all decisions relating to the functioning of the Oxford House™ democratically. Rather Oxford House relies on the social model of recovery with strict accountability to the group. Each house reserves the right to drug test individuals on demand.
Oxford House is open for all recovering individuals who have a desire to stay sober.
